Maju Forest / Sunset Way, Singapore
Maju Forest is a mature secondary forest in Sunset Way. 15 of its 23 hectares are proposed for clearing to make way for public housing — home to Critically Endangered species and decades of irreplaceable ecology. There is a better way to build.

Sunset Way residents wrote to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Ambassador for Climate Action Ravi Menon with an alternative: retain the forest in full as a research centre and recreational space — a living laboratory for urban cooling, biodiversity and climate adaptation, and a classroom for Singapore's schools.

From A Community Declaration for Maju Forest, by concerned residents of Sunset Way. Three things we ask before any forest is cleared:
This is not unprecedented
In 2021, roughly 1,800 residents spoke up for Dover Forest — and the plans changed, preserving part of the forest. At Tengah, where only 16 responses came in, clearing went ahead.
And it is happening here: after residents' feedback, MND said in August that more of Maju will be retained.
The lesson is simple: numbers matter, and it is not too late. Master Plans have been redrawn before — Sungei Buloh and Chek Jawa were both once slated for development, and both were saved. Maju can be next.
Housing serves Singapore for decades. A forest, if given the chance, serves Singapore for centuries.
What clearing Maju would destroy
Maju is home to the Sunda pangolin and the straw-headed bulbul — both Critically Endangered, both documented in the government's own environmental studies. A mature forest cools the neighbourhood, cleans the air, and offers people a rare place of quiet. None of it can be replanted overnight.
In solidarity
Across town in Telok Blangah, our friends at Save Gillman Forest are fighting the same fight — a mature forest facing clearance for housing, with the same gaps in how its human and climate impacts were weighed. It's not just about Maju; it's about the loss of any forest in Singapore. What's decided here will shape how the city treats every remaining wild space.

The petition asks HDB, MND, URA and NParks to pause clearance, publish the studies, and build the homes without erasing the wild.
